Ellen (BSc Honours 08/09) began her thesis work in June 2008 on our new research direction! She was collecting preliminary data on the interaction between HD11 cells (a bird macrophage cell line) and E. coli, a respiratory pathogen in birds. This will allow us to now elucidate the possible host defense role of avian surfactant, which has never been shown to date. |

Vanessa (BSc Honours 07/08) began her thesis work in May 2007 on a collaborative project with Dr. Edwin DeMont. She is determining whether pulmonary surfactant recovered from Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix) promotes relaxation of smooth muscle in the primary bronchus isolated from quail. This will further our understanding of the functional role of surfactant in the avian lung and how this compares to mammalian surfactant function. |

Caroline (BSc Honours 06/07) carried out her research with Dr. Carrie Shemanko at the University of Calgary and returned to St. FX in Sept. 2006 to complete her thesis titled Identifying early differentiation genes in the mammary cell line HC11. She received an award for her poster at St. FX's Annual Student Research Day. |
