The town of Antigonish has a lot to offer the tourist. It offers a nationally famous Summer Theater Festival (which came into being long before and will long outlive the Atlantic Theater Festival in Wolfeville!). For the past 12 years it has attracted actors and directors from across the country, and offers audiences a selection of who-dunnits, drama, comedy, children's plays and late night experimental productions. Antigonish is also home to St Francis Xavier University, which boasts a beautiful lower campus and majestic old buildings. Older homes are grouped in the center of town and are easily reached by foot. There is good shopping in our wonderfully vibrant downtown along with a mall closeby. There is also a small gallery which features many of the talented local artists, as well as a university gallery. And of course we could not forget the Antigonish Highland Games.
The area around Antigonish offers numerous beaches, a superb, award-winning hiking trail into the Fairmont Ridge, Beaver Meadow provincial park, kayak and canoe rentals, Celtic music, and the famous Highland Games (first or second week in July). At more of a distance you will discover historic Sherbrooke Village, Cape George, Cape Breton, Canso, and Lousibourg. We are 2¼ hours from Halifax (a day trip for the hardy soul), 2 hours from the airport, 1 hour from Truro (the closest stop for trains) and half an hour from Cape Breton. We are serviced by Acadian Bus Lines and numerous private shuttle services, as well as local taxis. We have a United Church, a Roman Catholic Church and an Anglican Church.
