COMMUNITY-BASED DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVALS

 

Film festivals are tools for citizenship education and community building. I initiated, coordinated, and was the curator for 8 community-based documentary film festivals and 2 in academic conferences:

·             4 in Antigonish (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 - Antigonish International Film Festival www.antigonishfilmfest.org))

·             1 in Inverness (2009– Inverness Film Festival)

·             1 in Sydney (Spring 2009 Sydney International Film Festival) & advised on Fall 2009 Sydney Film Festival

·             3 in Peterborough (2005, 2006, 2007- Traveling World Community Film Festival)

In 2009, a grant from the Adult Learning Knowledge Centre/Canadian Council on Learning allowed me to organize 2 documentary film festivals in Inverness and Sydney, Cape Breton Island, which involved contacting local people and coordinating at a distance.

     

In Peterborough, I received the 2007 Peterborough Civic Award for Cultural Betterment for the 3 Traveling World Community Film Festivals I organized.

 

DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL - NOVA FEDERAL PRISON FOR WOMEN (TRURO)

 

Initiated and, with a small group, implemented a new educational activity that includes programming documentary films & discussions with inmates.

I have coordinated public screenings of films:

·          A sense of wonder: The life of Rachel Carson, Antigonish, May 19, 2009. In collaboration with community organizations.

·     Enemies of happiness, Antigonish, May 21, 2008. Screening in solidarity with the International Day of Action to support Malalai Joya, elected Member of Parliament, Afghanistan . In collaboration with community organizations.

·          Pangea Day, an international online live event, followed by discussion, Antigonish, April 21, 2008

·          The Journal of Knud Rasmussen in collaboration with Trent University Indigenous Studies, Peterborough, Ontario, January 10, 2007

·          The Road to Guantanamo with a coalition of Trent University and community organizations in Peterborough, Ontario, April 2006

·          Walmart: The High Cost of Low Price with a coalition of Trent University and community organizations in Peterborough, Ontario, November 2005

 

OTHER UNIVERSITY/COMMUNITY-BASED ACTIVITIES

 

·          Coordinated poetry readings in various departments and universities

·          Initiated, designed, and led the transformation of a “creepy” space in the Department of Adult Education and Community    Development at OISE/UT now called the Peace Lounge, me a popular meeting space for faculty, staff, students, and community activists in Toronto.

·          Coordinated fundraising activities ($10,000) to support the family of a student from Sierra Leone in the midst of civil war

·          Participated in the student association of the Department of Adult Education and Community Development at OISE/UT

·          Involved with the speakers’ series and with the social committee of the department

·          Hosted meetings for United for Peace and Justice (UFPJ) in Nanaimo, BC, during the War in Iraq

 

CANADA WORLD YOUTH CROSS-CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT EDUCATION PROGRAMS

 

I was Program Coordinator for multi-national, multi-cultural teams of 50 people and I was responsible for educational planning, orientation of professional staff and participants, and leadership.
