Mom2Mom is a program with the goal of improving breastfeeding rates by offering peer support to breastfeeding mothers and increasing access to support.
The World Health Organization and Health Canada recommend that infants are exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life. However, less that 25% of Canadians exclusively breastfeed their infants for the recommended six months, and Nova Scotia is significantly below the national average at 9.6%.
How it works:
A group of trained mothers (Support Mothers) living within GASHA, who believe in the value of breastfeeding and peer support, will provide telephone support to pregnant women, and mothers with babies, living within the region served by GASHA. We believe that creating a support network of breastfeeding mothers is the best way to normalize breastfeeding in our communities.
Who is this program for?:
Support Mothers will be enrolled from communities within GASHA & matched with a mother-to-be. Support Mother will contact her match prenatally and again after she is informed the baby has been born. Contact will be made regularly to provide support and guidance. Activity Logs will be completed after each contact. Support Mothers in a geographical region are encouraged to hold group gatherings for mothers.
