The in vivo stress-strain and stress-strain rate
relationships of the adductor muscle in a swimming scallop were
predicted based on detailed measured swimming movements, and a
recently developed dynamic model which integrates all important
mechanical elements in the process. The in vivo behaviour of the
muscle was found to be quite different than the in vitro
properties measured on isolated muscle fibres, which suggests
that in general the latter might not be directly used to predict
the in vivo mechanical events.
