This photograph shows a closeup of the technique we use to measure the Poisson's ratio of cartilage. The sample is placed in a small temperature controlled bath, and compressed by a Cambridge Technology, Inc. Lever System (in the support system on the left). The strain in the direction of the compression is recorded by the Lever System, and the strains in the other two planes are recorded simultaneously with a Video Dimension Analyzer using a magnified image collected using a dissecting microscope. The bottom photograph shows an overview of the apparatus, with the two microscopes in place.
