Introduction:

Introduction:

Hydrology is the study of the occurrence and movement of water. The course will focus on the processes controlling surface and groundwater and the exchange of water between these natural reservoirs and the atmosphere. Aspects of human interaction with these systems will also be introduced. Laboratory assignments are designed to give students an understanding surface water and groundwater hydrology.

Lectures:

Students are responsible for all material covered in lectures and assigned as reading material in class.  There is no required text for the class.  However, those students who feel the need to purchase a text are recommended the following:

Viessman, W and Lewis, G.L.  Introduction to Hydrology (5th ed.), Prentice Hall, ©2002.

Dingman, S.L.  Physical Hydrology, Prentice Hall, ©1997.

Schwartz, F.W. and Zhang, H.  Fundamentals of Ground Water, Wiley, ©2003.

Topics:

·         the hydrologic cycle

·         streamflow

·         hydroclimatology

·         hydrogeology

·         contaminant hydrology

·         resource assessment

Laboratory Projects and Assignments:

Laboratory projects will involve a series of exercises dealing with various aspects of hydrology and some may involve a field component. These exercises will assist in developing an understanding both the collection and an analysis of hydrologic data.  Students will also be responsible for reviewing and critiquing papers from scientific journals throughout the term.

Laboratory assignments are expected to be handed in at the beginning of the laboratory session on the scheduled due dates.  Late assignments will not be accepted. Academic dishonesty including copying directly from articles and texts and the work of other students will not be tolerated and will be reported to the Departmental Chair and the Dean of Science.  Students must hand lab reports directly to the Professor or teaching assistant for the course.

Evaluation:

Midterm 20%

Final Exam 40%

Lab Projects and Assignments 25%

Term Project 15%
