Photographs

Photography, described as the "mirror with a memory", was an all-consuming passion for Victorians. Almost every aspect of life, such as sporting events, economic activities, royal visits, death, etc., came under the eye of the camera. As a useful visual record, photographs yield a plethora of details about costume, hair styles, accessories and sentimental poses. This selection of unidentified photographs from the Antigonish Heritage Museum captures a spectrum of lives set against modest studio backdrops, from the elegant, leisured woman, to the young girl standing stiffly in her best clothes, to the wide-eyed baby swathed in tartan.
