Education

     Prof. Laurie Stanley-Blackwell is a Full Professor in the Department of History at St. Francis Xavier University. She holds degrees from Mount Allison University (B.A.), Dalhousie University (M.A.) and Queen’s University (Ph.D.)

Publications & Research

     Professor Stanley-Blackwell is author of The Well-Watered Garden: The Presbyterian Church in Cape Breton, 1798-1860 and Unclean! Unclean! Leprosy in New Brunswick 1844-1880, and primary author of Historic Antigonish: Town and County. Her most recent book is Tokens of Grace: Cape Breton's Open-Air Communion Tradition . Stanley-Blackwell's articles appear in such journals as Acadiensis, Nova Scotia Historical Society Collections and British Deaf History Journal, as well as such reference works as The Dictionary of Canadian Biography, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography and The Canadian Encyclopedia. Stanley-Blackwell is co-author of Canadian Studies: A Guide to the Sources and has reviewed for Canadian Historical Review, Studies in Religion, Canadian Book Review Annual, Choice and Journal of Southern History. She has also contributed to the following anthologies: Changing Roles of Women within the Christian Church in Canada, The Contribution of Presbyterianism to the Maritime Provinces of Canada, St. George’s Cathedral: Two Hundred Years of Community and Les abeilles pillotent. Professor Stanley-Blackwell’s specialties are the history of Maritime Canada, as well as Canadian cultural and religious history. Her current research project funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada focuses on the history of deaf culture in 19th-century Maritime Canada.

 

Courses

     Prof. Stanley-Blackwell teaches History 207 (History of Quebec), History 209 (History of the Maritime Provinces), History 300 (A Cultural and Intellectual History of Canada),and History 400 (Seminar in Canadian History) [See Academic Calendar]. Her students in History 300 have assisted with the creation of two web sites: "A Virtual Tour of the Architectural Heritage of Antigonish, Nova Scotia" and "From Querns to Quilts: A Select View of the Material Culture of Antigonish, Nova Scotia". Two other web sites,"Window onto the Past: 19th-century Antigonish" and "Stony Silences: Headstones of Antigonish", are currently under construction. In 1995, Stanley-Blackwell was awarded St. Francis Xavier University’s Outstanding Teaching Award. In 2004, she was nominated by StFX for the Association of Atlantic Universities' Distinguished Teaching Award.
