"Stoney Silences": Headstones of Antigonish

Maps of Antigonish and Antigonish County

"We were in the heart of the woods now and could see the ghostly glimmer of the few still-standing headstones standing out against the dark screen of thickly-growing evergreens...A small white slab shone through the thick grass at our feet. We knelt to see, clawing away the obscuring moss and grime. Carved at the top was Little Jesus holding a lamb and below it the words: 'Maggie, aged two years'...Here was another: 'Anne Isabel, beloved wife of Donald Ronald MacNish, departed this life in the eighteenth year of her age. Thou hast made us for Thyself O Lord, and our hearts are weary until they rest in Thee."
(Raymond A. MacLean, Recollections: Margaret (Peg) MacGillivray, 1977)
