Outline of material after the wheat boom

Reading for Wednesday Jan. 24: Greely and Oxner, ‘Tale of Two Dominions’

Objectives and outline of essay due Jan. 17th

The expectation is that you have read the most important items in your bibliography and have developed a good idea of the thesis and organization of the essay. The paper giving the objects should indicate the specific issues you will address in the essay.  Ideally you will have a thesis statement that you will defend in the essay.  You should also have a brief outline of the essay that indicates the major sections and the topics that will be addressed in each one.

I will read these and try to give guidance on how to proceed.  I will ask for resubmission if they are inadequate rather than give them a mark.

Note: I’ve added a paper that includes the Livelihood model and probably provides the clearest exposition.  The discussion of the model begins on p. 5 of the paper linked below.

Any standard from is acceptable. A link to this form is placed here for your convenience.

Note: Please use footnotes (at the bottom of a page) rather than endnotes (at the end of the paper).

Underlining was used because typewriters could not use italics.  Now that word processors are available, underlining of titles should be replaced with italics.

William Strunk jr. The Elements of Style

This could be called ‘Writing for dummies and a reference for the rest of us’  Browsing through section II Elementary Principles of Composition might be very rewarding.

Strunk’s particular writing style is old fashioned.  Note in particular the lack of gender neutral language. Nonetheless, the principles remain sound.  For example, the vast majority of students would benefit from reading Section II the Active Voice where he shows weak sentence construction and strong sentence construction.
