I have been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Adult Education at St. Francis Xavier University since 2007. I received a Bachelor of Arts in 1976 and a Master of Adult Education (MAdEd) from Saint Francis Xavier University in 1992. My MAdEd research focused on strategies for supporting and retaining women’s participation in part-time distance education programs (i.e. STFX’s Post RN BScN program). In 2007, I was awarded a PhD in Adult Education from the UNESCO Centre for Comparative Studies in Education, University of Nottingham (UK). My dissertation entitled Enabling volunteer capacity in district health planning; A rural Canadian case study focused on community engagement in local health planning and health volunteerism.
My early career involved working in the area of student services/learner support (counseling and career planning and placement) in a variety of university settings across Canada. Subsequently, my practice focused on community-based research and the design of adult education programs for organizational and community-based learning and development. Working mostly with not-for-profit and volunteer organizations, women’s centres, and other community-based organizations, I have developed a particular interest in how the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, determine their health
I am interested in undertaking research related to community health and development. Specifically, I am interested in the role adult education and community development can play in enabling citizens to take action related to their health. I want to increase understanding about the links between health and learning, and am currently examining learning that takes place for adults in health promotion and health education programs delivered in community settings.
