The Horse of Pride: Life in a Breton Village

French with English subtitles

The Horse of Pride

(1980, 118 min.)

A lyrical tale of Brittany from 1908 to 1918 about the hardships and joys of Breton peasant life, focusing on the story of a young couple who meet, marry, and soon have a son. Too poor to own a real horse, they are content to ride "the horse of pride," an adage passed down from generation to generation. In addition to exploring the customs and folklore of the Bretons, the film reveals the important changes brought about by the First World War. Based on Pierre-Jakez Hélias’ autobiographical novel of the same name.
