Course Description

This course will provide a survey of selected topics in global history from the 14th century to the present including links between civilizations of the world and the process of modernization culminating in developments in the 20th century. The twin themes of traditions and encounters will be employed to assess the interaction of the various peoples and cultures explored in this course.

The purpose of this course is to provide a basic foundation for further study in history.

The method of instruction is primarily through lectures but we shall try to have some discussions on important subjects as well as slide and film presentations where we can manage them. Attendance is important (see calendar 3.8).

While classroom lectures are intended to provide emphasis and analysis of significant topics, reading is also very important.
