Teacher Information
My name is David MacDonald and I'd
like to thank you for choosing to utilize this activity! It has been
constructed for a "Computers
in Education" course which I am involved with at St. Francis
Xavier Universitiy in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. Please contact
me if you have any comments or suggestions.
Any teacher who requires the answers
to this activity can please feel free to contact me by e-mail
and I will try to respond to your request as soon as possible.
Purpose:
An on-line group and/or individual activity to build upon the modeling
and function
fundamentals that were introduced in class. Also for students to
gain experience using mathematics computer applications and the Internet.
Prior Knowledge:
-
Should have attended the previous classes
when modeling was introduced.
-
Basic computer and Internet skills
-
Must have attended the introductory
lab on Secondary Math Lab TOOLKIT, unless there is previous experience.
Materials:
-
Secondary Math Lab TOOLKIT
-
Computer - 486/33MHz or higher
-
Windows 3.1,3.11, 95, or DOS 5.0
-
12 MB of RAM
-
VGA Monitor
-
Internet Access
-
Diskettes
-
Printer/Paper(not totally necessary)
-
Ideally, each student will have their own computer station
to work with, if this is not possible, groups of two to four could work
together.
-
Groups larger than four at one computer usually leads to
distraction and may result in some students being left out of the activity.
-
Students can feel free to use what ever resources they have
available to them (texts, class notes, calculators....) to aid them in
the activity, but they must use the Math Lab TOOLKIT to answer
the questions.
-
The teacher should monitor the activity to make sure the
students are on task, i.e. "not surfing the Net", and help with technical
questions.
-
Students can also feel free to ask their peers for help.
-
Any student who has the Math Lab TOOLKIT on their personal
computer will be able to access the activity at any time and if necessary,
complete it at home.
-
Students should e-mail the teacher to get feedback on what
they thought of this type of activity.
