Dr. Kennedy has a B.A. in English from St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto (1984), and received his MA (1992) and PhD (1997) in Moral Theology from the University of Notre Dame. His work at Notre Dame was supported by a Doctoral Fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. His major field of research is the ethics of St. Augustine. Professor Kennedy has published two co-edited collections of papers, A Reader's Companion to Augustine's Confessions (Westminster John Knox Press, 2003) and Augustine and Literature (Lexington Press, 2006). He has published articles on Augustine’s political thought, his theory of time, and his method of interpreting the Bible. During his sabbatical (2008-2009), he began research into the thought of St. Anselm of Canterbury; in the past year, he has given three papers on Anselm and has written an invited paper on Anselm’s conception of freedom, which is scheduled to appear later this year (2009 being the 900th anniversary of St. Anselm’s death). He has also contributed to the HarperCollins Encyclopedia of Catholicism (HarperCollins, 1995), Augustine through the Ages: An Encyclopedia (Eerdmans, 1999), and The New Catholic Encyclopedia (The Catholic University of America Press, 2002), and published book reviews in the Journal of Early Christian Studies, Augustinian Studies, Studies in Religion/Sciences Religieuses, and Maritain Studies. From 2003 to 2008, Prof. Kennedy was co-chair, with Dr. Kim Paffenroth, of the Augustine and Augustinianisms Group in the American Academy of Religion.
