GBEP PARTNERS

GBEP has arisen from several questions asked by the members and the leadership of the Gulf Nova Scotia Bonefide Fishermen's Organisation (GNSBFO). Concerned about groundfish, especially hake, predation on immature lobster during this era of recovering fish populations, fish harvesters approached Gulf Region, DFO Science with a request for information on and evidence respecting the topic. Dr. Michael Chadwick, Maritimes Region, DFO Science suggested that Interdisciplinary Studies in Aquatic Resources (ISAR) at St. Francis Xavier University (St.F.X.U.) be approached regarding the possibility of facilitating collaborative research. After a couple of exploratory meetings and discussions, ISAR, GNSBFO, and members of DFO Science agreed that a collaborative approach to mounting an interdisciplinary study of the St. Georges Bay human and marine ecosystem offered the most promise. An ecosystem study is the best approach to providing effective answers to the specific questions that harvesters are asking. Additionally, a collaborative, ecosystem-focused study of the sort envisioned here will better situate marine resource harvesters and DFO science respecting participation in and development of sustainable and environmentally-friendly approaches to resource exploitation.
