Students

Kieran Murphy (MSc)

2013 - 2015, supported in part by the DFO ACRDP program and the Centre for Biofouling Research
Kieran started in September 2013. His Master's research focuses on invasive tunicates and what environmental factors may affect their populations.
Kieran says: I graduated from Trinity College Dublin in Ireland with a B.A. in Environmental Sciences and have found the perfect challenge to lure me away from the Emerald Isle. I discovered my passion for invasion ecology during my final year in TCD, when I studied invasive aquatic plants as a part of my thesis. I am excited to be involved in a project that has a very practical goal and displays collaboration between the public and private sectors. Having just finished a seven month trip to New Zealand, I can't wait to immerse myself in a new culture and landscape..

Natalia Filip (MSc)

2013 - 2015, supported in part by an NSERC Industrial PGS, the NSERC CRD program and the Centre for Biofouling Research
Natalia started in January 2013. Her Master's research focuses on field testing of fouling release coatings, and their potential for reducing impacts of invasive tunicates in aquaculture and other marine industries.
Nat says: I completed my BSc in Biology at UVic. After working with sea turtles, tropical coral reefs, and small mouth bass, I learned my heart belonged to invasive tunicates. My passion is rock climbing and mountaineering, and I am enjoying exploring the East Coast.

Natalia Filip

Rebecca Kennedy (Undergrad)

2014, supported by an NSERC USRA, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Aquaculture Association of Nova Scotia.
Rebecca is working closely with Keiran Murphy, surveying invasive tunicates and environmental conditions around Nova Scotia.
Rebecca says: I am an advanced biology major going into my fourth year here at St. FX. Originally from PEI, I am very excited to spend a summer on the mainland doing research on invasive tunicates with Kieran and other members of the Wyeth lab. I love nature, reading and anything travel! After my undergrad I hope to pursue a career in medicine.

Rebecca Kennedy

Veronica Ells (Undergrad)

2013 - 2014, supported by a StFX Biology Chiassson Award and the Centre for Biofouling Research
In 2013, Veronica began volunteering to help Natalia Filip study new antifouling coatings that reduce invasive tunicate growth, and is now getting paid to do the same in 2014. She is also tackling her own project studying the effect of colour on fouling by tunicates.
Veronica says: I am currently going into my 3rd year at X. I am looking forward to doing research in the Biology department this summer! After my undergrad I plan on and can’t wait to attend vet school, which has been my goal since grade 2!

Veronica Els

Theora Holden (Undergrad)

2014, supported by National Geographic
Theora is study sea slug movement patterns and a potentially new way animals might use magnetic fields to navigate.
Theora says: Raised in Antigonish, I'm a second year student in the biology program here at X. Though I have yet to find my focus I am excited about exploring the wide world of biological studies. Some of my other passions include religious studies, sketching, bookmaking and watching bad horror movies.

Theora Holden

Katy Grosicki (Honours)

2012 - 2014, supported by an NSERC USRA and the Centre for Biofouling Research
Katy started in 2012 with a StFX Summer Research Internship. She is now continuing with her honours research on lab tests of fouling release coatings, and is co-supervised by Dr. Cory Bishop.

Sara Livingstone (Directed Studies and Post-Baccalaureate)

2013 -2014, in 2013 supported by the Atlantic Lobster Sustainability Foundation, working on bait preferences in lobster, and in 2014, supported by the StFX University Council for Research, working on nudibranch chemical ecology.
Sara says: I am originally from northwestern Ontario and am entering my 4th year at X! I have really enjoyed spending the past few years on the east coast! This spring I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to study crustacean behaviour! After completing my undergrad I hope to continue work with marine life and invertebrates!

Sara Livingstone

Jonathan Schwarz (Undergrad)

Summers 2012, 2013, supported in part by StFX UCR, Biology Dept, the Malacological Society of the UK, and the Pacific Northwest Shell Club.
Jono is working on sensory systems and navigational behaviours in Tritonia.
Jono says: All the way from beautiful BC! I'm finishing up my BSc at StFX in Biology and hope to go on to Medicine after my undergrad. I really enjoyed my research at Bamfield and gained a lot of valuable knowledge from it!.

Jonathan Schwarz

Ian Carrigan (Undergrad)

2012 - 2013, supported in part by NSERC and Dr. Roger Croll.
Ian is working in collaboration with Dr. Croll at Dalhousie University in Halifax on the sensory neuroanatomy of the sea slug Aplysia.
Ian says: Hailing from Bedford, Nova Scotia, I am a third year student here at X. Though my Advanced Major will be in chemistry, I have an equal passion for biology and plan to pursue a career in medicine. My interests include skiing, windsurfing, piano, and, of course, studying the peripheral nervous system of Aplysia californica!.
