Art 141 - Survey of Art History I
This course is a broad introduction to the history of Western art from pre-history through the Middle Ages. Its primary purpose is to familiarize students with the various artistic styles that appear during different historical periods in Western culture. Students will learn about the relationship of art to its contemporary social, historical and intellectual context – what people in these societies believed was important.

Art 251 - Medieval Art & Architecture
This course examines major developments in the art and architecture of the Middle Ages in Europe, from the triumph of Christianity in the Imperial Roman period through the late Gothic period of the early fourteenth century. The Bible itself and most of the early Church theologians associated images with idolatry and paganism, yet this 1000-year period proved to be one of exceptional richness and diversity in the visual arts. We will see how works of medieval art and architecture reflect and respond to changing theological, devotional and societal needs.

Art 252 - Baroque Art & Architecture
This course explores developments in painting, sculpture and architecture by artists such as Caravaggio, Bernini, Poussin, Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Velázquez during the 17th & early 18th centuries. Their work will be examined within contemporary social, political, religious and cultural contexts: the Counter-Reformation in Italy and new ideas about the function of religious images and buildings; urban planning and the rebuilding of Rome; absolutist monarchies and propaganda in the visual arts; the specialization of the art market and genre painting in the Netherlands; and the rise of the art academies and art theory.

The Life of Christ
Iconography is the identification and interpretation of images. This course is an introduction to the iconography of Christian art with an emphasis on images of the Life and Passion of Christ. This course will examine how images develop over history, and how they may be understod in light of historical events, changes in theologoical thought, and in the artist's own spirituality.

Art 357 - Iconography of Christian Art
The Saints
This course is an introduction to the iconography of Christian art, wtih an emphasis on images of Mary and the saints. The course will examine how images develop over history, and how they may be understood in light of historical events, changes in theological thought, and in the artist's own spirituality. Discussion wil include how such images were used as objects of personal devotion but also for the conveying of important theological and social values.

This course is a survey of the visual arts in Italy from the late 13th C through the end of the 15th C (from early Gothic painters such as Giotto to the precursors of the High Renaissance in Florence and Venice). The course will consider works of art from the point of view of artistic style and technique, and will also examine how the work of art functions within its social and cultural context .

Art 372 - Northern Renaissance Art & Architecture
This course is an examination of the art of the Renaissance in Northern Europe from the late Gothic period through to the mid-sixteenth century. Matters of artistic style and technique (in painting, sculpture and the graphic arts) will be considered as well as what works of art tell us about what people thought was important in Renaissance France, Germany, and the Netherlands. Many interesting social changes druing the period, such as the Protestant Reformation, had profound consequences for art in the North.

This course is a survey of the visual arts in Italy from the late 16th C, beginning with the new grand manner developed by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. With the development of the idea of artistic genius, problems linked to artistic license arose as the century progressed. This course will consider works of art from the point of views of artistic style and technique, and will also examine how the work of art functions with its social and cultural context.

Doni Tondo Michelangelo

Art 435 - Seminar in Italian Renaissance Art
This course is an intensive investigation into an aspect of Italian Renaissance art. Topics may include: Michelangelo and his biographers; Girogio Vasari's Lives of the Artists; Raphael in Rome; Renaissance art in Venice; or Italian Mannerism. Students will learn to use and assess important primary sources from the Renaissance period, and will also examine the secondary literature in some depth.
