Some Information on the 1986 IR Survey

            . The first survey conducted in the 1986 academic year included three Canadian schools and one American (the numbers of usable surveys completed are shown in parenthesis): St Francis Xavier, Nova Scotia (275), Dalhousie, Nova Scotia (117), University of Winnipeg, Manitoba (198) and Ohio State University (126). The surveys from StFX included PS 100 classes and a first year Physics and a first year Psychology class. The total surveys for 1986 are 589 Canadian and 126 American. Item "A5" the subjective ideological placement on these surveys is not directly comparable to 1987 because it includes option three "Progressive" which was removed on 1987 survey.

All survey were conducted of first year political science students between Oct 1987 and January 1988 resulting in the following surveys:

St Francis Xavier (PS100 171); Memorial University, Newfoundland (77); University of Toronto, Ontario (118); These are the 366 surveys in Can87.sav.

Arizona State University (120); University of Pennsylvania, Lockhaven (104); Holy Cross, Massachusetts (25) and University of Maine (79). These are the 328 American surveys in US87.sav.

These two data sets are combined in All87.

On items dealing with the popularity of Reagan it is possible that external events such as the Iran/Contra hearings in the Summer of 1987 have affected the second year.
