The team

Dr. Edwin DeMont , Full Professor in the Biology Department at St. Francis Xavier University, received his Doctorate in aquatic animal locomotion from the University of British Columbia.  He was a NATO Science Fellow at the University of Leeds in England and is an adjunct professor in the School of Biomedical Engineering at Dalhousie University. Dr. DeMont has won both the Outstanding Teacher Award and the President’s Research Award at St. Francis Xavier University.  He worked as a Master Tutor for Swimming Canada and taught Biomechanics to Olympic and national swimming coaches.

Dr. DeMont was a member of three different NSERC Committees and a former Committee Chair.  He is a founding member and the first president of the Offshore Energy Environmental Research Association (OEER).  In 2004, he was a scientist in an ESRF funded project entitled Effects of Pipelines/Gathering Lines on Snow Crab and Lobster and he has published a number of papers on aquatic animal locomotion.

In the past year, Dr. DeMont has worked with a StFX team designing an Energy Savings Backpack (patent pending) that is currently in the process of being commercialized.  Dr. DeMont is eager to work with an industrial partner to explore further biomimetic applications and is open to research collaborations.

Tina Dickieson, Intellectual Property Research Assistant, received her Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Calgary.  She was an auditor for a large accounting firm after graduation where her client based consisted primarily of oil and gas companies.  Following this, she worked for a start up high-technology company and assisted with the commercialization of its proprietary software. Since joining the BioMimiX team, she has attended a course to learn about the structure and function of animals and has completed focused training in the area of intellectual property management. She has facilitated the patenting process for the Energy Savings Backpack and looks forward to providing further support and guidance on upcoming projects.
