Traditions and Events: Christmas

Christmas money gifts given in 1911 to Angus and Alexander McNeil, sons of John McNeil and Mary Ann MacDonald, formerly of Giant's Lake, Guysborough County. Although Christmas became increasingly commercialized in the late 19th century, the tradition of gift-giving in Antigonish County remained low-key into the 20th century. Most Christmas gifts were homemade, such as a pair of knitted gloves or socks. For children, oranges as well as small animals (viz. rabbits, dogs, kittens, birds and even little pigs) fashioned from dough and baked were popular Christmas morning treats.

Sleighing was a typical winter pastime for local children. A handmade sleigh was a popular gift on Christmas morning.
