Pupils at Merland School used to carry water from this stream to the schoolhouse.  On the upstream side where the road crosses the stream they also gathered pieces of soft shale that they used to write on their slates.  John Haley is collecting samples, just as he did 82 years ago, but this time for himself and for an old friend now in a nursing home.
