Hughie (Ewan Mor) Gillis (Eigg Mountain Settlement History)

 

Came over from Scotland and settled first in PEI then moved over to Eigg Mountain (c. 1820).  The only Hugh in the Arisaig area listed as a farmer in 1838 had 2 sons and 2 daughters under 6; 3 daughters between 6 and 14; 1 son and 2 daughters over 14.  Likely he was born around 1797-1800.  In later years he became demented and even a bit violent.  That may be why some of the later Gillis did not acknowledge a relationship.
