John Gillis (Eigg Mountain Settlement History)

From Morar, Scotland, first came to America in 1788.  Secured a grant of land on which the first Arisaig church was built in 1793.  Returned to Scotland “to bring out his wife and child, and a young woman, a relative, to become the wife of his friend John McNeil.” (Rankin, 142)

He is reputed to be the first permanent Scottish settler in what was to become Antigonish County (MacLean, et al., 45)
