Portfolio for Ed 467 Fall/Spring 2000-2001

At the end of the course the student will have a useful tool kit, resources to be used in applying for a position, in teaching and sharing with colleagues. The portfolio should consist of the following items neatly filed in a binder with each section clearly marked. See the Lectures and Assignments Page for due dates for various parts of the Portfolio. The final finished portfolio is due on the last day of classes.

Requirements: [total 85 points]

  1. [15 pts] Bookmarks: Consult the Nova Scotia Curriculum Guides in one of your major teaching subjects. If you are in elementary, choose one of major areas such as language arts and pick a grade level. If you plan to teach junior high social studies, you might choose Grade 7-9 Geography, etc. (See Resource Library for these guides or print out the pdf draft copies from the NS Department of Education site). Create a folder for each teaching outcome in your Netscape bookmark file. Find the best Bookmarks for as many of the teaching outcomes as you can. As you are gathering these bookmarks, immediately file them under the most appropriate folders and be sure to include descriptive titles and descriptions as to their intended use in teaching according to the teaching objectives for that particular outcome . (This is very important since it will be fresh in your mind) See a small  exampleusing some NS Physical Education Grade 9 Curriculum Outcomes.

  2. In addition, collect bookmarks in the following areas. The quantities in parentheses is a minimum number. Whereever possible, find Canadian sites.
    1. Classroom management Tips and Ideas ( 5)
    2. Effective Integration of Computers into the classroom - such as staff development ( 5)
    3. Major teachable subject area  ( 25 spread out over the teaching outcomes as explained above)
    4. Computer Security - student, computer, and school safety issues ( 5)
    5. Computer Software review sites ( 5)
    6. Best General Teacher References - major educational resources, organizations, and  publications ( 10 )

  3. [4 pts.] Joining Listservs: Try out a number of external Listservs and follow and/or respond to messages from the ones you decide to follow for at least 2 weeks. Evaluate each of these listservs by filling in the Listserv Evaluation Guidelines form. Also print only the 1st  page of the welcoming message received from each of these listservs.
    1. General Education- include a computer technology group ( 2 )
    2. Major teachables- spread out over subject area - i.e. science - try to join life, biological, space, and physical science forums or discussion groups ( 2)
  4. [6 pts.] Listserv Messages: Collect and print out helpful e-mail messages or messages you have posted to external listservs  in the following categories.: use highlighter pen to identify  sections of messages you found especially useful.
    1. General education tips (6)
    2. Major and minor teachable tips (6)
  5. [8 pts.] Software: Printout a Software Evaluation Form for a software package you have chosen to learn and demonstrate to the class. The software will be presented to the class in groups of 3.  Be sure to include at least two non commercial sources of reviews.
  6. [5 pts] Spreadsheet: Demonstrate proficiency in use of spreadsheets by printout of formula and regular versions of a sample student grade book and attendance record.
  7. [8 pts] Word Processing:Demonstrate proficiency with Word Processing  by creating a newsletter (You may use the same topic as your online lesson.)
  8. [12 pts] PowerPoint:Demonstrate proficiency in the use of PowerPoint as described in the PowerPoint lesson - hand in a diskette containing a 10+ slide presentation or send me the file as an attachment to email . Place a 6 slide/page print out in your portfolio. (You ay use the same topic as your online lesson)
  9. [15 pts] Online Lesson Via email send me the URL (also link it to your homepage) of your  Online Lesson Page which  you have constructed in your major area.  Print out a copy of the online lesson  for your portfolio. Also fill out only the top part of the Site Evaluation Form and include the form in your portfolio with your online lesson.
  10. [10 pts.] Home Page - Create a personal Home Page. See Home Page Lesson for details. Include a printed copy in the portfolio.
