PowerPoint 97 in Education

PowerPoint is a Presentation Application program. One can produce a slide show on screen, overhead transparencies, and 35mm slides. The onscreen slide show can be animated, containing clipart, sound, movies, and web connections. In addition, audience hand outs and speaker notes can be printed out to go along with a presentation. The design of a presentation should be simple, using the same background and format for all slides to give it consistency.

Creating a Slideshow

In order to create a slide show, we need to set transitions in advancing from slide to slide as well as animation effects which determine how objects in each slide appear
Adding Transition effects: Change to slide sorter view à select all slides ( Ctrl + A or by Edit à Select All à Slide Show à Slide transition à see the various effects on the dog and set to one you like à set to slow or medium à set advance to automatically after 5 seconds à apply to all à select first slide and change to slide show view à see the effects and transitions you have created à all of these settings can be changed for any number of slides at a time.
Timing your slide show: It is important to rehearse your presentation until you are confident with it. The time it takes to completely explain each slide can be recorded so that an automated show can be presented. it is best to use the mouse click as well as the automatic timings.
Instead of setting the time for each slide, a rehearsed time can be set for each slide by: Slide Show à Rehearse timing.

  1. Hide slide: Go to slide sorter view à select slideà right click slide à Hide slide à now moving through the presentation, you will not see the hidden slide
  2. Rehearse slide timings: Return to first slide( Ctrl + Home) à Slide Show à Rehearse Timings à read each slide and click left mouse when ready for the next slide. This will record the time used. If you make a mistake within any slide, just click the repeat button. If you want to stop the clock, click the pause button à when done with the entire show, click Yes to record timings. à click Yes to see times in sorter view.
  3. To show hidden slide use the Slide Navigator: While on last slide of slide show, click right mouse à Go à choose hidden slide
  4. Annotate a slide: While in slide show, right mouse à Pointer Options à Pen Color à choose color and draw a circle around Use Tools … ( The quick keys for pen and arrow are Ctrl + P and Ctrl + A ) the drawing will erase after the show is exited.
Creating a Presentation in Outline View
  1. The quickest way to enter a presentation is in outline view.  To create the indented items or sublevels you press the demote arrow as many times as needed to indent the items to reach the proper level.
  2. To collapse outline to just the slide titles, click on collapse all button
  3. To move slides, drag slide icons from one position to another.
  4. To Apply a Template or colors and design scheme: Format à Apply design à see previews of the many templates available and choose Fireball à change to Slide View and view the slides.
  5. Sounds, your own recordings, and movie clips can be inserted from files or the MSOffice gallery by going to Insert à movies and sounds à selecting which type of files you wish to insert into your slide.

The Slide Master

If you want the same objects and formatting to appear on each slide, the Slide Master is used: View à Master à Slide Master à select and delete the number area at the bottom right à select and drag the footer rectangle to the right.

To fill in footer on each slide: View à header and footer à Under date/time click Update automatically à In the footer checkbox, enter name of University à apply to all

The font and size for all slides can also be changed in the Master

Homework to be Handed in the Portfolio on last day

Create a 10+ slide presentation on any topic of interest to you. You may use the same topic, cliparts, and links as your online lesson. You must include at least one of each: photograph, clipart, speaker notes, transition and animation effects. Print out the slide show 6 slides per page with a white background and include this in your portfolio. Save the presentation to your w drive and send me the URL in an email message.
The URL to your presentation will look something like this
