ANTH/WMGS 326 Assignment one: Kin diagrams and their uses
Dr. Susan Vincent
10 January 2018
Form groups. Put all first and last names on a piece of paper on which you will construct a kin diagram.
Objectives:
To learn to construct kin diagrams, according to the conventions handed
out in class; to learn how kin diagrams can be used to record
information of different sorts about kinship or the personalities
involved.
Task: Construct a kin diagram of four generations.
This can be based on a family one of you know, or a television show, or
entirely invented, but should be a situation and set of kin practices
with which you are familiar. Try to present it to illustrate a
particular aspect, such as whether religious marriage declines over
time, or family size over time, or type of job men and women from
different generations have, etc. Come up with a way of showing this on
the diagram. Be sure to include a legend to explain the symbols you
use, both those from the class material and any new ones you invent.
