Sample test/exam essay question.

Answer the following essay as if it were one of three essays on a 3 hour exam. You may submit it to me on or before 5 March. You may submit it electronically. This is not part of your mark for the course. It is an opportunity for you to get experience writing test essays and to get my feedback on it.

Remember that your essay should have an argument which answers the question, and evidence which supports the argument. Briefly explain the context and tell the reader what kinds of criteria you are taking into account in your analysis.

Compare and contrast the approaches to kinship taken by Carsten ("Constitutive Knowledge: Tracing Trajectories of Information in New Contexts of Relatedness") and Weismantel ("Making Kin: Kinship Theory and Zumbagua Adoptions"). Which approach do you find more useful in studying descent kinship? Explain.
