DEVELOPMENT
- Anthropology of development versus development anthropology
- Who needs to be developed?
- - what are the characteristics of those who need to be developed?
- - how do these characteristics relate to how foragers, pastoralists, horticulturalists, etc. live?
- How
did humans come to think that "development" could be intentionally
induced rather than being a natural process that just happened?
- Can we intentionally induce change without causing unintended, possibly very negative, consequences?
- What is the source of contemporary poverty, ill health, despair, etc.?
- What can be done?
- Note
that how one answers the above questions depends on your theory of
development. Miller mentions some theories, all of which assume that a
state of development can be intentionally induced. They differ on
whether the problem is seen as one of insufficient growth, inadequate
distribution of wealth, whether economic poverty or human welfare
(education, health, safety) are central, and on the balance between
economic growth and environmental sustainability.
- How have I studied processes of development in Peru since 1984? (slides)
- Are the people of Allpachico more "developed" now than they were then?
