Land Tenure (Eigg Mountain Settlement History)

This land was granted to Hugh MacGillivray in 1829.  Before his death in 1883 he bequeathed it to his son Alexander. (see Probate file A-1098).  He describes it as 130 acres on Brown's Mountain, Range 12, Lot 11.

There is an anomaly here.  It is unclear how Hugh, who lived in Summerville, came to own the land.  The Church Map, 1878 puts an A. MacDonald here and that is consistent with Christina Connors report of an Allan MacDonald.  The escheat file 268 of 1951 indicates that the Crown bought the land from Daniel D. Mac Donald for $200: further evidence that the attribution to the MacGillivrays may be a mistake.
