J. MacDonald (first of three) (Eigg Mountain Settlement History)  (Map Location)

J. MacDonald.  If the old house site to the south was not occupied in the early 1900s this could be John MacDonald “(Carpenter) son of John MacDonald” listed on Colin and Christina’s list.

This is the first of the sites on the Gault Road marked J. MacDonald on the Church map (see the second).  There is a second foundation at this site.  The foundation had the remains of a large chimney in the centre.  It is oriented 106º (east).  The east wall is 24 ft. and the north wall is 30 ft.  The cellar was only under half of the building on the west side.  There is some open field around it with one or two surviving apple trees.

This view, especially if you can “freeview” the pair in 3D, gives an idea of what cellars look like as you approach them – there is a berm with an apparent drop behind it.

This is a view of chimney stones looking across from the foundation wall.
