, John (Eigg Mountain Settlement History)

This is the John Gillis property to the east (although on the west of the road) of the John Gillis son of John Red (see Lot 568).[1]  The site is northwest of the intersection of the main Trunk Road and the Old Trunk Road going down toward William Fettle Gillis’s.  John Gillis built the house here.  He moved away in 1936 to Knyodart, taking the house with him (dismantling it and moving it in sections).  This is roughly the time that William Fettle left, however Fettle continued to return to his farm site, so this presumably is the basis for the claim that he was the last on the Mountain.

[1] This account is contradicted by John Red Gillis’s will A-383 in which he leaves the property to his son Angus.
