My research interests concern the science of energy metabolism, broadly. My program of research at StFX is focused on two main areas:

1. In the Mitochondrial Physiology Lab at StFX, we investigate human kinetics at the cellular and subcellular levels. Major ongoing projects include the investigating the thermal budgets of energy metabolism in integrated organisms - organisms exchanging, distibuting, and/or shuttling metabolites within and between cells, particularly as this relates to muscle and brain. Students currently researching in this area include Rochelle Estabrooks, and Brooke MacDonald. Generous support has been granted by CFI, NSRIT, NSHRF, and NSERC.

2. In the Human Performance Lab at StFX, applied exercise metabolism projects include the application of wearable sensor technology for the assessment of exercise metabolic thresholds in distance runners. Students currently researching in this area include Brett King and Caden Lee. Generous support for this area of research has been provided by Invest Nova Scotia.

Highly motivated students are encouraged to contact dkane@stfx.ca about potential research opportunities
