Prairie Spirit
Chinook Medley, 1992
Wool and silk, 152 x 214 cm

Chinook Medley was presented to the City of Calgary in celebration of the 125th anniverary of the Confederation of Canada. The imagery traces the history of southern Alberta set against its natural landscape. Buffalo tracks and bands of pattern inspired by the quillwork of First Nations peoples speak to the distant past. European settlers and the national railroad altered that history forever. Ranchers and farmers developed vast acres of grain and grazing land. More recently there is the development ofpetroleum industry. The border of the tapestry is decorated with prairie wildflowers, fields of wheat, the vast sky and the iconic Chinook Arch.
