Ranald Fraser[1] (Eigg Mountain Settlement History)  (Map Location)

Old Ranald Fraser (b. 1789 - d. September 10, 1865) NSVS born Scotland “interred in the parish cemetery of St. Margarets Arisaig on the 6th day of September 1865” SMAR married Mary or Margaret MacIsaac (b. 1790 - d. August 29, 1865) NSVS born Scotland “interred in the parish cemetery of Arisaig on the 28 of August 1865” SMAR

Ranald Fraser arrived in 1823 at the age of 34 with his wife and his two sons, Angus [Ranald], 8 years old and "Sandy" [Alexander Ranald], 3 years old. They are reputed to be the first family to settle in the Eigg Mountain /Maple Ridge area.[2]  He was born on the isle of Eigg on Scotland’s west coast.  According to the 1838 census he had 5 sons over the age of 14, (plus 4 sons and a daughter between 6 and 14).

In this area, south along the main road near the school, there were 3 to 5 foundations.  The Teasdales think that they might be able to identify 3 (we have since located 3: #634; #4134; #4136).  I have tentatively placed one more on the map, for Dan Fraser (#4151).  The Teasdales initially thought that the largest foundation (attributed to Ranald) was near the current access road (built by logging companies) and was probably filled in.  Now we think it may be a cellar located in May 2008 just to the west.

Footnotes

[1] Ronald, however MacLean, et al. spell the name “Ranald.” This was certainly how it was pronounced

[2] Evidence points to John Kickham being the first settler.
