Land Grants: Eigg Mountain Area (Eigg Mountain Settlement History)

(see Land Grant Petitions)

(see Making Claims to the Land)

(see feature codes for land grants)

(See measures, declinations)

The sources for land grants information are:

1) the land grant index map (Index Sheet no. 98) produced in 1953 (to see a copy of the map go to: http://novascotia.ca/natr/land/indexmaps/098.pdf).  On it are indicated:

-The name of the original grantee (usually)

-The book and page number of the original grant record [field called “Book” in the ArcView file “Land_Grants”]

-The grant index number (often) [field called “Index_numb.” In ArcView]

-The document reconveying land to the Crown (a number in a circle) [field called “Escheat” in ArcView]

2) The original grant records (listed below) which include:

-A surveyor’s description (in metes and bounds)

-A plan

-Name of the grantee

-Lists of the names of occupants of surrounding properties – these can be used to extend the dates of known tenure.  When the names are different from the grantees of those lands they indicate subsequent owners at the time of the described grant.

3) Deeds

-Indicating when land was transferred to new owners (these are often missing however since settlers often transferred ownership by handing the deed document to the new owner without notifying the land office)
